「青年」（せいねん） is the time of life when a person is young, especially the time before a child becomes an adult.

Why does 青 mean young?

「青」 often includes green. It indicates growth. Green fruits are 「青い果実」（あおい かじつ） and immature and not ready to eat.

Green leaves are 「青葉」（あおば） or 「青青とした葉」（あおあおと した は） and implies spring and growth.
